EDF Launches Fourth Data Center Project at Former Thermal Power Plant near Lyon
EDF has launched a call for interest for a new data center project at its former thermal power plant site in Loire-sur-Rhône, marking its fourth such initiative as it aims for six sites by 2026. The project responds to increasing electricity demand from data centers, with the state facilitating faster connections to the grid. EDF is focused on reducing internal delays to align with industry standards, while prioritizing contracts to stimulate domestic consumption.

EDF has initiated a new call for interest for a data center at its former thermal power plant site in Loire-sur-Rhône, near Lyon, after previously signing contracts for data centers in Seine-et-Marne and Moselle. This is EDF's fourth data center site and the second call for interest, aiming for six sites by 2026.
The 60-hectare site was operational from the 1960s to 2005, with dismantling completed in 2013. EDF seeks projects exceeding 50 MW capacity, responding to the rising electricity demand from data centers.
The state is supporting fast-track connections to the electricity grid to expedite these projects. EDF aims to reduce internal delays from three to four years to align with industry benchmarks of 10 months and is prioritizing contracts with data centers to address stagnating domestic consumption.
