Edwards Aquifer Restrictions Eased from Stage 4 to Stage 3 Amid Ongoing Drought Concerns
The Edwards Aquifer Authority has downgraded water restrictions from Stage 4 to Stage 3, effective June 3, 2026, providing relief to approximately 2 million residents. The change follows improvements in aquifer health metrics, but ongoing drought conditions and increased demand from local data centers pose significant long-term risks.

Effective June 3, 2026, the Edwards Aquifer Authority has lifted Stage 4 water restrictions, transitioning to Stage 3 for Medina, Bexar, and parts of several surrounding counties. The Comal Springs' flow rate increased to 100 cubic feet per second, and the J-17 index well reached 632.7 feet above mean sea level, surpassing Stage 4 thresholds.
However, the aquifer remains 27 feet below its historical average, with key water sources still under pressure. The impact of the drought, which has persisted for seven years, is profound, affecting public health infrastructure and leading to mandatory pumping reductions.
Concerns grow as data centers enter the aquifer's recharge zone, further straining the resource. Future rainfall remains uncertain, despite potential benefits from the El Niño pattern.
