Egypt Enhances Efforts for Lake Qarun Ecological Restoration
Egypt is advancing its ecological restoration plan for Lake Qarun, focusing on wastewater treatment and pollution control. The initiative is vital for improving water quality and supporting biodiversity, with significant investments and infrastructure developments underway.

Egypt is implementing a comprehensive strategy to restore Lake Qarun's ecological balance, emphasizing wastewater management and pollution reduction. The Ministry of Local Development and Environment has reported a 70% completion rate on the rehabilitation of the Kom Oshim industrial wastewater treatment plant, which has a capacity of 19,000 cubic meters per day and an investment of EGP 450 million.
A broader wastewater services program aims to benefit approximately 1.9 million people in Fayoum. The Decent Life initiative supports the upgrading of sewage services to cover about 86% of the population.
Recent interventions have improved environmental conditions in the lake, enabling fishing to resume. Plans for a salt extraction plant and public awareness campaigns on waste disposal are also in progress. The urgency of these initiatives reflects the critical need for environmental restoration.
