EIA Forecasts Largest US Electricity Demand Growth Since 2000 Driven by Data Centers
The US Energy Information Agency (EIA) projects a 1% increase in electricity use in 2023 and 3% in 2027, marking the strongest four-year growth since 2000. This growth is primarily driven by data center demand.
American Electric Power expects its load additions to rise from 24GW to 28GW by 2030, with 80% linked to data centers. Solar power generation is anticipated to increase by 21% in 2026 and 2027 due to nearly 70GW of new capacity.
Natural gas output is expected to reach 109 billion cubic feet per day this year, while coal generation is projected to decline by 9% in 2026. Recent policies have favored traditional energy sources over renewables, imposing taxes on wind and solar projects.
