EIB Provides €225 Million to Iren for Circular Economy and Energy Efficiency in Italy
The EIB and Iren Group have signed a €225 million finance contract to enhance circular economy and energy efficiency initiatives for 2025-2028. Key investments will focus on waste management, energy-saving upgrades in non-profit facilities, and promoting pay-as-you-throw systems. The project aims to reduce annual waste generation by 50,000 tonnes and save 6,800 MWh of primary energy, benefiting regions in north-western Italy.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed a €225 million contract with Iren Group to support the company's investment plan from 2025 to 2028. The project aims to enhance waste sorting and energy efficiency, with measures including the introduction of pay-as-you-throw systems, new waste management infrastructure, and energy-saving upgrades in non-profit-run buildings.
The EIB estimates that the project will save approximately 6,800 MWh of primary energy annually and cut waste generation by around 50,000 tonnes. Investments will primarily occur in Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna, and Liguria, with additional initiatives in Tuscany and other regions.
