Eidesvik Offshore Contracts Conversion of Viking Energy to Ammonia-Powered PSV
Eidesvik Offshore has signed a contract with Halsnøy Dokk to retrofit its PSV Viking Energy for ammonia fuel, part of the Apollo project. The conversion aims to begin ammonia operations by 2026, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 70%. The project includes structural modifications and installation of a Wärtsilä dual-fuel engine. Testing will follow the yard stay, with support from Equinor and the EU-backed consortium featuring Maritime CleanTech.

Eidesvik Offshore has contracted Halsnøy Dokk to retrofit the Viking Energy platform supply vessel to operate on ammonia, advancing the Apollo project into execution. The conversion is set to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 70% compared to conventional fuels and is scheduled for ammonia-powered operations by 2026.
Prefabrication will commence in spring 2026, with completion expected by autumn 2026. The project includes structural modifications and the installation of a Wärtsilä dual-fuel engine. The Apollo project, backed by Equinor, aims to demonstrate ammonia as a feasible marine fuel. Viking Energy will become the first offshore vessel to utilize ammonia fuel in commercial operations.
