Electra Battery Materials Awards $8.3M Contract to Complete Temiskaming Cobalt Refinery Construction
Electra Battery Materials Corporation has contracted EXP Services Inc. for $8.3 million to manage the completion of its cobalt refinery project in Temiskaming Shores, aiming for mechanical completion in early 2027 and production shortly after. The project, which was halted in 2023 due to financial and logistical issues, is set to produce 5,100 tonnes of battery-grade cobalt sulfate annually, increasing to 6,500 tonnes. Site preparations and procurement activities are already underway.

Electra Battery Materials Corporation has awarded a contract worth $8.3 million to EXP Services Inc. for engineering and project management services to finish its cobalt refinery project south of Temiskaming Shores. The company aims for mechanical completion in the first half of 2027, with commissioning and production to follow.
The project was previously halted in 2023 due to inflation and cash constraints. Electra plans to produce 5,100 tonnes per year of battery-grade cobalt sulfate, increasing to 6,500 tonnes. Preparatory work, including procurement and construction planning, has resumed.
