Electric Vehicle Council Urges Australian Government to Maintain EV Discounts Amid Industry Challenges
The Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) has called on the Australian Government to retain its electric vehicle discount policy, which has contributed to over 105,000 additional EV sales and increased market share from 2% in 2021 to 13% today. The proposed changes could lead to a decline similar to those seen in Germany and New Zealand. Meanwhile, Albemarle plans to close its Kemerton refinery, impacting 250 jobs, due to high costs and shifting market dynamics.

The Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) urges the Australian Government to preserve the electric vehicle discount policy, which has driven over 105,000 additional EV purchases and increased market share from 2% in 2021 to 13%. The discount has also tripled the second-hand EV market size.
The EVC warns that reducing or removing incentives could lead to market declines as seen in Germany and New Zealand. Concurrently, Albemarle is shutting its Kemerton lithium refinery, affecting 250 jobs, due to high operational costs and market shifts. This closure follows challenges at other local lithium facilities, reflecting broader issues in the EV supply chain.
