Energinet Opens Capacity Sales for Danish Hydrogen Backbone 1 Infrastructure
Energinet has opened capacity sales for the Danish Hydrogen Backbone 1, marking a significant step in developing Denmark's hydrogen market. This capacity sale allows market players to reserve transport capacity in a planned hydrogen pipeline from Esbjerg to Frøslev at the Danish-German border.
The sale transitioned from initial discussions to binding market needs, enabling producers and customers to establish actual agreements. A minimum booking of 0.5 GW is required for the project's economic sustainability before final decisions on construction are made.
The project aims to support hydrogen production using Denmark's solar and wind resources, targeting industrial consumers and future exports to Germany. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-2028, with the pipeline operational by the end of 2030. The capacity sale will run until 1 December 2026, with Energinet offering 2.7 GW of transport capacity from 2030 to 2046.
