Energy Storage Projects in Australia Seek EPBC Act Approval for 1.2GWh Capacity
Multiple energy storage projects in Australia are seeking EPBC Act approval for a combined capacity of 1.2GWh. Notable projects include Tonic Group's 75MW solar PV and battery system, Avenis Energy's 120MW/480MWh Sunshine Estate BESS, and AGL's 150MW/300MWh facility, with construction expected to take around 12 months and operational lifespans of approximately 20 years. The developments will impact local wildlife habitats, prompting proposed mitigation measures.

Multiple energy storage projects across Australia have submitted for EPBC Act approval, totaling 1.2GWh. Tonic Group's project includes a disturbance footprint of 12 hectares affecting foraging habitats for protected bird species and the western ringtail possum, with a proposed avoidance area of 38 hectares.
Infrastructure will feature 75MW solar PV modules and a battery storage system. Avenis Energy's Sunshine Estate BESS project will have a capacity of 120MW/480MWh, designed for four-hour storage, with a 50-hectare area and connections to the Rothbury Zone Substation.
AGL plans a 150MW/300MWh battery system near the Ausgrid Muswellbrook Substation, covering approximately 4.874 hectares. Construction for these facilities is expected to take around 12 months, with operational lifespans of approximately 20 years.
