Engie Plans Bitcoin Mining and Storage Solutions at Brazil's Assu Solar Plant
Engie is exploring the installation of storage systems or bitcoin mining data centers at its Assu solar plant in Brazil to enhance profitability and mitigate curtailments affecting energy production. The 895 MWp facility began full operations in February 2026 but has faced reduced output due to grid balancing issues, which have led to significant financial losses for energy companies. Engie aims to create local demand through these initiatives, though implementation is expected to take several years.

Engie is considering the installation of storage systems or bitcoin mining data centers at its Assu solar plant in northeast Brazil to improve profitability and address curtailments that have impacted energy generation. The Assu plant, with an installed capacity of 895 MWp, commenced full operations in February 2026.
However, curtailments due to grid balancing have reduced production, affecting the project's economics. Engie is evaluating potential offtakers and aims to create local demand as a long-term solution, although implementation will require a couple of years.
