Engine Factory Avadi Validates UTD-20 Engine with 500-Hour Endurance Test Completion
Engine Factory Avadi has successfully completed a 500-hour endurance test of the UTD-20 engine, validating its full rated life. This achievement is critical for India's goal of complete indigenisation in military vehicle manufacturing, particularly for the BMP-series infantry fighting vehicles.

Engine Factory Avadi (EFA) completed a 500-hour endurance test of the UTD-20 diesel engine on July 31, 2026, confirming its full rated service life. The UTD-20 powers India’s BMP-1 and BMP-2 infantry combat vehicles and features a V-configuration, six-cylinder design delivering 300 horsepower.
This milestone follows a multi-year effort that achieved 100% indigenisation, addressing challenges with critical components like the delivery valve. The success of the UTD-20 underscores India's aim for self-reliance in military manufacturing, reducing dependency on foreign supply chains. Future efforts will focus on scaling production to meet ongoing demands for BMP-2 engines and refining manufacturing processes.
