Environmental Clearance Granted for Reef Resorts Development in Belize
The Department of the Environment has approved the Reef Resorts Limited project on Ambergris Caye, aiming to enhance tourism while adhering to environmental regulations. Key recommendations include protecting marine ecosystems and ensuring minimal ecological impact during construction.

The Department of the Environment (DOE) has granted environmental clearance for Reef Resorts Limited's project on a 1.2-acre island near Ambergris Caye. The development, an extension of Ramon's Village Resort, is located within the Hol Chan Marine Reserve's General Use Zone E, where activities are allowed if they meet regulatory compliance.
A public consultation for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) occurred on December 18, 2025. The project will not require extensive clearing but will involve controlled landfilling to elevate the island by about 1.5 feet.
Construction will focus on three zones featuring eco-friendly designs, including solar power and wastewater treatment systems. The National Environmental Appraisal Committee (NEAC) recommended the project with conditions to protect marine ecosystems, such as avoiding dredging near seagrass beds and implementing mangrove protection strategies. The DOE has accepted these recommendations.
