Environmental Concerns Rise Over Proposed Tree Felling in Aizawl
The proposal to remove 176 trees in Aizawl for infrastructure projects has raised alarms among environmentalists, urging a review. The Centre for Environment and Social Justice (CESJ) highlights significant carbon storage and biodiversity loss if the trees are cut.

A proposal in Aizawl involves the removal of 176 trees to facilitate infrastructure projects, igniting environmental concerns. The trees, located within a 16.9-hectare area, are critical for carbon sequestration, storing approximately 4,830.04 metric tonnes of carbon.
The projects include the widening of Aizawl Spine Road and development activities near AR Hospital. A study by CESJ documented 480 trees across 80 species and stressed their ecological benefits including air purification and habitat support.
The Chief Minister has promised development aligned with environmental conservation, while calls for re-evaluation of the felling plan continue. The rapid loss of tree cover in Mizoram adds urgency to these conservation efforts.
