Environmental Groups Challenge Approval of South32's Hermosa Mine
Environmental organizations have formally objected to the U.S. Forest Service's approval of South32's Hermosa Mine. They cite potential legal violations and significant environmental risks as reasons to withdraw the approval.

More than a dozen environmental organizations have filed an objection against the U.S. Forest Service's draft Record of Decision and Final Environmental Impact Statement for the Hermosa Mine, located 30 miles southwest of Tucson.
This objection initiates a 45-day period for community concerns, with the final decision expected by July. The groups argue that the analysis fails to meet legal standards under various federal laws and underestimates the project's impacts on water and wildlife.
South32 plans to invest $2.16 billion in the mine, which aims to produce critical minerals like zinc and manganese, essential for electric vehicle batteries. The mine is designed to minimize air pollution and reduce water usage by 90%. The outcome of this objection could significantly affect the mine's development and regulatory processes.
