Equinix Expands Data Center Operations in South Africa with $438 Million Investment
Equinix Inc. plans to invest R7.5 billion ($438 million) to enhance data center capacity in South Africa, targeting a 160 MW increase. The initiative is driven by rising demand for AI infrastructure, reflecting a significant growth trajectory in the region's data center market, projected to exceed $5 billion by 2031.

Equinix Inc. is set to expand its data center capabilities in South Africa as part of a R7.5 billion ($438 million) investment, primarily to capitalize on the continent's AI demand. The company has acquired additional land in Johannesburg and Cape Town for this purpose, securing a total of 327,000 square meters and planning for an additional 160 megawatts of capacity.
Current operational capacity in Africa stands at approximately 409 megawatts, with less than 1% of the global total. The South African data center market is expected to grow from $2.6 billion in 2025 to over $5 billion by 2031, driven by increased investments from major players such as Microsoft and Amazon.
With competitive pressures from other firms like Teraco and Vantage Data Centres, Equinix's timely expansion is crucial to maintain its market position. The risk of oversupply may impact pricing and utilization if demand does not keep pace with new developments.
