Equinix's Lelystad Data Center May Use 66x More Power Than Initially Estimated
Equinix's planned data center in Lelystad could consume up to 150 megawatts, significantly exceeding initial estimates of 3,000 to 5,000 households. Experts suggest it could equate to the power usage of 200,000 households, nearly double the current total consumption in Lelystad. The project circumvents a national ban on large data centers due to its smaller land footprint. While located near a power station to mitigate grid stress, concerns remain about its environmental impact over its projected 15-25 year lifespan.

Equinix's data center in Lelystad is projected to consume 150 megawatts, 66 times higher than initial estimates. Energy expert Enzo Diependaal suggests it could serve the power needs of 200,000 households, compared to earlier figures of 3,000 to 5,000.
The center's estimated annual consumption of 753 gigawatt-hours is nearly double the city's current usage. Although it bypasses a 2022 national ban on large data centers due to its size, it raises concerns about increased gas-fired electricity demand and climate goals. The facility's location near a power station aims to prevent grid overload.
