Equinor and Shell Appoint Leadership for New UK North Sea Joint Venture, Adura

HYDROGENCARBON CAPTURE

Equinor ASA and Shell PLC have taken a significant step in their joint venture, Adura, by appointing Neil McCulloch and Nicoletta Giadrossi to lead this ambitious initiative in the UK North Sea. This partnership, which merges the offshore assets of both companies, seeks to establish Adura as the largest independent producer in the region, capitalizing on both firms' production capabilities, which exceed 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day combined.

As they move forward, the joint venture awaits regulatory approvals, with plans to launch operations by the end of 2025. McCulloch, who has a robust background in the energy sector with over three decades of experience, has been at the helm of Spirit Energy since 2022, where he has focused on natural gas production in the Netherlands and the UK. He expressed enthusiasm for Adura’s mission to provide secure energy for the UK, emphasizing a commitment to operational excellence and strong values.

Giadrossi, currently the chair of MSX International and possessing considerable expertise in both listed and private companies, brings her extensive experience in energy and infrastructure to the venture. She articulated her excitement about the potential of Adura to drive long-term value while prioritizing safety, sustainability, and performance.

The venture will incorporate substantial assets from both Equinor and Shell, including Equinor's significant stakes in fields such as the Buzzard and Mariner fields, as well as the anticipated Rosebank project, slated to come online in 2026 or 2027. Meanwhile, Shell will contribute its interests in the Clair and Gannet fields, among others. Several exploration licenses are also set to be transferred to Adura, further enhancing its operational capabilities.

Importantly, while Adura will harness these new assets, both Equinor and Shell will retain ownership of specific cross-border and renewable energy projects, including offshore wind farms and carbon capture initiatives. This strategic alignment positions Adura not only as a key player in the UK energy landscape but also as a forward-thinking entity prepared to address the challenges and opportunities of the evolving energy market. With approximately 1,300 employees from Shell and around 300 from Equinor working in UK operations, the joint venture stands to significantly impact the local economy and energy sector.
