ERCOT Battery Energy Storage Capacity Exceeds 15 GW in Q1 2026
ERCOT's battery energy storage systems (BESS) surpassed 15 GW, with 1.1 GW added in Q1 2026. The growth rate has slowed compared to late 2025, indicating potential financing challenges ahead.

As of Q1 2026, ERCOT's operational battery energy storage capacity reached 14.96 GW, with a new deployment of 1.1 GW across 20 projects. This quarter marked the highest first-quarter deployment on record, significantly exceeding the previous year's figures.
However, the growth rate is slowing, having previously seen quarterly additions of up to 2.1 GW in late 2025. Notably, the North zone now leads in capacity with 4.55 GW, overtaking the West zone. Additionally, withdrawals from the interconnection queue are accelerating, with 3.4 GW withdrawn since 2025, indicating tightening financing conditions. Modo Energy projects a total of 63 GW by 2030, but the central forecast estimates only 36 GW, highlighting the gap between projected and commercially viable capacity.
