ESB Outlines Vision for Ireland's Energy Transition to Net Zero by 2050
ESB aims to transform Ireland's energy system to focus on clean, home-grown electricity by 2050. The strategy includes decarbonizing electricity generation and promoting electrification across transport, heating, and industry.
A publication set for early 2026 will detail this vision, supported by MaREI research, indicating that over 70% of energy needs could be met by electricity by 2050. ESB reports a 19% reduction in carbon intensity since 2021 and a 40% increase in renewables and storage capacity from 1.3GW to 1.8GW.
Future projects include over 10GW of renewable energy and significant investments in solar farms. To enhance system resilience, ESB plans to invest €13.6 billion in grid capacity and aims to leverage green hydrogen for stability. The company is also focusing on making the energy transition appealing to consumers, addressing affordability challenges, and emphasizing the role of innovation in advancing energy solutions.
