ESB Proposes 300MW Battery Storage Facility in East Cork
ESB seeks approval for a 300MW battery energy storage project at Aghada, aiming to enhance Ireland's renewable energy grid integration.

The ESB has submitted plans to Cork County Council for a significant battery energy storage facility at its Aghada generating station, targeting a capacity of 300MW. This project would more than double the existing 150MW battery plant operational since 2024, enhancing energy management by storing excess electricity during peak renewable generation for later release to the national grid.
The proposed development includes up to 200 battery units, control and switchgear buildings, and a fire management plan. A decision from the council is expected by August 25, with potential implications for Ireland's energy resilience and sustainability goals.
