ESCOM Receives 12 Units of 20MW Battery Energy Storage System in Lilongwe for Improved Power Supply
The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) has received 12 units of a 20MW Battery Energy Storage System in Lilongwe, aimed at enhancing the country's energy stability. Funded by a $20.245 million grant from the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet, the system will help regulate frequency, integrate renewable energy, and reduce load shedding. The project is set for commissioning in February 2026, representing a significant advancement in Malawi's power infrastructure.

Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) has received 12 units of 20MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Kanengo in Lilongwe, marking a significant step towards enhancing Malawi's energy stability. The BESS will perform three key functions: frequency regulation to prevent blackouts, integration of renewable energy sources by stabilizing solar power fluctuations, and reduction of load shedding by storing energy for peak evening hours.
This project, funded by a $20.245 million grant from the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), is set for commissioning in February 2026. ESCOM states that this development represents a crucial advancement in modernizing Malawi's power infrastructure and addressing chronic electricity shortages.
