ESS Tech Secures $9.9 Million Contract for Energy Storage at U.S. Clear Space Force Station in Alaska
ESS Tech, Inc. has been awarded a $9.9 million contract by Concurrent Technologies Corporation and the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory to deploy up to 27 MWh of iron flow battery systems at the Clear Space Force Station in Alaska.
This project is part of an AFRL initiative aimed at testing advanced energy storage technologies in extreme conditions, including temperatures below -40°C. The systems will integrate with microgrids and advanced controls to ensure reliable power for mission-critical operations at the facility.
ESS manufactures these systems using iron, salt, and water. The Department of Defense is focusing on long-duration resilient microgrids to enhance readiness, particularly with American-made technologies to mitigate foreign cybersecurity risks.
