Ethiopia Awards Contract for 150 MW Weranso Solar Plant Development to South Africa and Portugal Firms
Ethiopia has awarded a contract for the development of the 150 MW Weranso Solar Plant to South Africa's Thabo Consulting Engineering and Portugal's Sun Business Development. Valued at approximately USD 706,790, the project aims to enhance renewable energy generation and includes a feasibility study, environmental assessments, and a resettlement action plan. This initiative, part of Ethiopia's strategy to boost clean energy capacity by 2030, will cover about 250 hectares and connect to a nearby substation via a new high-voltage transmission line.

Ethiopia has awarded a contract for the development of the 150 MW Weranso Solar Plant to Thabo Consulting Engineering from South Africa and Sun Business Development from Portugal. This project aims to enhance renewable energy generation and reduce reliance on hydropower and fossil fuels.
The consultancy agreement, valued at approximately USD 706,790, includes preparing a feasibility study, conducting environmental and social impact assessments, and developing a resettlement action plan. The solar plant, owned by Ethiopian Electric Power and supported by the African Development Bank, will cover about 250 hectares and connect to a nearby substation via a new high-voltage transmission line. The project is part of Ethiopia's strategy to increase clean energy capacity by 2030 and respond to growing electricity demand.
