EU Advances Green Steel Initiatives; Brazil's Competitive Potential Highlighted
The European Union is intensifying its focus on green steel production, significantly impacting global decarbonization efforts. Brazil, with its clean energy matrix and high-quality iron ore, has the potential to emerge as a leader but requires stable regulatory conditions to capitalize on this opportunity.

The European Union generated 71% of its electricity from clean sources in 2024, with a record of 54% from renewables in Q2 2025. Brazil possesses abundant hydropower, high-quality iron ore, and potential for green hydrogen production, making it well-positioned for green steel production.
However, the country lacks a stable regulatory environment, which is critical for attracting long-term investments. Initiatives like the Green Deal and CBAM in Europe aim to establish a legal framework for decarbonization and encourage market demand for green steel. Without clear regulations and financing mechanisms, Brazil's ambitions for a green industrial sector may not materialize, risking its global competitive edge.
