EU and India Launch Joint Initiative for EV Battery Recycling
The EU and India have initiated a €15.2 million joint project focused on recycling electric vehicle batteries. This initiative aims to enhance recycling technologies and reclaim essential materials like lithium and cobalt for battery production.

The EU and India have initiated a joint initiative with a funding of €15.2 million aimed at developing recycling solutions for electric vehicle batteries. This collaboration will focus on advanced recycling technologies, secure collection systems, and pilot demonstrations of innovative processes.
A pilot line in India will validate new processes under real conditions, promoting scalable and sustainable solutions collaboratively among researchers, companies, and educational institutions. By 2030, India is projected to have 128 GWh of recyclable battery capacity, transforming battery waste into a source of high-purity materials. The project also emphasizes high recovery rates and integration of the informal sector, with a proposal submission deadline of September 15, 2026.
