EU Launches Space Act to Enhance Competitiveness and Sustainability of European Space Sector
On June 25, 2025, the European Commission initiated two initiatives aimed at making European space cleaner, safer, and more competitive. The EU Space Act addresses disparities in national approaches to the security, resilience, and environmental sustainability of space infrastructures, which can negatively affect the supply of data and services in the EU.
It proposes a legal framework for data and service provision by European operators, requiring them to obtain authorization from the relevant Member States. The Act also mandates the establishment of the Union Register of Space Objects (URSO) by the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) to register authorized European space operators.
Additionally, the proposal emphasizes the need for a single European space market, the promotion of research and innovation, and the commercialization of the space industry. The Act will now undergo negotiations in the European Parliament and Council.
