EU Tech Package Aims to Triple Data Center Capacity in Europe
The EU Tech and Sovereignty Package seeks to enhance Europe's digital autonomy, particularly through the Critical Architecture and Data Act (CADA), which aims to triple data center capacity within 5-7 years. By simplifying licensing for strategic projects and imposing sovereignty requirements on cloud and AI services, the initiative aims to bolster European compute infrastructure.

The European Commission has introduced the EU Tech and Sovereignty Package, focusing on strengthening digital autonomy in Europe. Central to this is the Critical Architecture and Data Act (CADA), which sets a goal to triple European data center capacity within five to seven years.
The act will simplify licensing for strategic projects and impose strict sovereignty requirements on cloud and AI services. Notably, EU member states currently spend 264 billion euros annually on U.S. IT, suggesting that reallocating just 10% of this budget could largely cover the necessary investments for the initiative. This shift is viewed as essential for achieving strategic autonomy in the sector.
