European Commission Approves €200M German Aid for Canadian Renewable Hydrogen
The European Commission authorized a €200 million German scheme to fund the production of renewable hydrogen and its derivatives in Canada, aimed at supplying the EU market. This initiative supports the Clean Industrial Deal, EU Hydrogen Strategy, and REPowerEU Plan.
The funding will unlock an additional €200 million from Canada and is set to facilitate the construction of up to 300 MW of electrolysis capacity. The competitive bidding process for aid is expected to conclude in 2027, potentially avoiding 2.47 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
Beneficiaries must comply with EU RFNBO production criteria. This scheme follows previous approvals to support renewable hydrogen production in non-EU countries.
