European Future Cloud Project: Modular Integrated Sustainable Datacenter Initiative Launched
The European Commission approved the IPCEI-CIS framework to enhance digital sovereignty, supporting initiatives like MISD for sustainable data centers. This project aims to address market failures in European cloud infrastructure, focusing on modular and distributed data center designs.

The Modular Integrated Sustainable Datacenter (MISD) project, supported by the IPCEI-CIS framework, is designed to create modular and sustainable data centers in Europe. It involves approximately 120 companies and research institutions, including Eurofiber, SAP, and Siemens.
The project emphasizes modularity that accommodates distributed energy sources, with containers housing computing power while data remains at existing regional centers. TNO is tasked with developing software to optimize infrastructure and service integration.
The initiative seeks to respond to the increasing demand for data centers while ensuring sustainability and security. Implementing distributed systems introduces potential vulnerabilities but also enhances redundancy. As testing progresses, the feasibility of deploying these modular systems will become clearer, reflecting a shift in addressing data center needs sustainably.
