European Processor Initiative Advances High-Performance Computing with New Processors and Milestones
The European Processor Initiative (EPI), established under Horizon 2020, aims to develop European-made processors for high-performance computing (HPC). EPI has transitioned through stages SGA1 and SGA2, with key developments including the successful manufacturing of the EPAC Accelerator chip in 2023 and the upcoming Rhea1 processor, to be sampled in 2026. The initiative supports European technological sovereignty and aims to integrate its technologies into supercomputers like JUPITER and Alice Recoque, enhancing Europe's HPC capabilities.

The European Processor Initiative (EPI) was launched in 2018 under Horizon 2020 to develop European processors for high-performance computing (HPC). EPI's first stage (SGA1) concluded in 2021, advancing towards two processor families: Arm and RISC-V.
The second stage (SGA2) began in January 2022, focusing on European microprocessors to enhance digital autonomy. Notable milestones include the successful manufacturing of the EPAC Accelerator chip in November 2023 and the upcoming Rhea1 processor, which will be available for sampling in early 2026.
Rhea1 is targeted for integration into the JUPITER supercomputer and will support various programming languages and AI frameworks. EPI continues to contribute to the European HPC ecosystem, with further developments expected from consortium partners.
