Eurowings Partners with Greenlyte to Develop Sustainable Aviation Fuel at Düsseldorf Airport
In a significant move towards sustainability in aviation, Eurowings has forged a partnership with Greenlyte, a promising startup, to create a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) laboratory at Düsseldorf Airport. This collaboration marks a critical step in addressing the environmental challenges facing the aviation industry. As part of the agreement, Eurowings will exclusively purchase the SAF generated during the initial three years of the project, ensuring a steady demand for this innovative fuel.
The laboratory will employ a cutting-edge power-to-liquid kerosene process, which captures carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere, combining it with green hydrogen to produce synthetic fuel. Once operational, the facility is projected to generate approximately 150 tons of SAF annually, sufficient to power around 60 flights between Düsseldorf and Palma with a 50% SAF blend.
Lars Redeligx, CEO of Düsseldorf Airport, hailed Eurowings' commitment as a "strong signal" for the aviation sector, underscoring the importance of scaling up production and refining manufacturing processes to make electricity-based SAF more economically viable in the future. This initiative not only highlights a proactive approach to sustainable aviation but also sets a precedent for other airlines to follow suit in their environmental efforts.
