EUSPA Contracts Arianespace for Launch of Second-Generation Galileo Satellites with Ariane 6

SPACE ECONOMY

The European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) has signed a contract with Arianespace to launch the second pair of Galileo Second Generation (G2) satellites using the Ariane 6 rocket. This contract, announced on January 27, 2026, marks Ariane 6's fifth launch for the Galileo programme, following its first mission on December 17, 2025.

The Galileo L18 mission aims to enhance the EU's autonomous satellite navigation capabilities, previously reliant on SpaceX for launches. In total, two additional Ariane 6 launches are planned to complete the first generation of Galileo satellites. The transition to the second generation includes advanced technologies and is part of the EU's strategy to secure independent access to space following reliance on non-European launch services.
