The Alliance Group Lorneville meatworks in Southland was evacuated due to elevated hydrogen sulphide levels following a fire. Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) responded to an automatic alarm at approximately 5:40 AM, deploying six trucks, a tanker, and a Hazmat command unit.
The fire was under control by 7 AM, though the cause remains undetermined. All personnel were safely evacuated and accounted for. This incident underscores the risks associated with gas exposure in industrial settings, necessitating stringent safety protocols.
