Evergy Delays Coal Phase-Out at Lawrence Energy Center Indefinitely
Evergy has abandoned plans to cease coal burning at its Lawrence Energy Center, extending operations beyond 2028. This decision responds to increased electricity demand and concerns over grid reliability.

Evergy will continue coal operations at the Lawrence Energy Center indefinitely, reversing previous plans to transition to natural gas by 2028. The utility cited a need to maintain 35 megawatts of electricity generation to meet rising regional demand driven by customer expansions and new industrial interests, including data centers incentivized by state legislation.
There are no current timelines for coal retirement, and environmental groups have criticized the decision amid ongoing concerns about emissions and coal ash disposal regulations. Evergy is also developing new natural gas facilities to address the demand for electricity.
