EWEC Receives Bids for Al Nouf 1 IPP Project in Abu Dhabi
Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has received four proposals for the Al Nouf 1 Independent Power Producer project, set to be the UAE's largest carbon-capture-ready Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) plant. This initiative is crucial for enhancing grid stability and meeting future energy demands while advancing the UAE's decarbonization goals.

EWEC has received four competitive proposals for the Al Nouf 1 Independent Power Producer project, which aims to generate up to 3.3 GW of electricity. The proposals come from international consortia, including Al Jomaih Energy and Water Company with Sembcorp Industries and EDF Power Solutions; ENGIE with Korea Overseas Infrastructure and Urban Development Corporation and Korea Western Power; Korea Electric Power Corporation with Etihad Water and Electricity; and Sumitomo Corporation.
Expected to begin operations in Q3 2029, the project will be located within the Al Nouf Complex, designed to support efficient energy generation and low-carbon desalination technologies. Integrating advanced technologies such as AI, the Al Nouf 1 plant will play a key role in ensuring supply security amid the UAE's shift towards renewable energy. The project aligns with the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy's Clean Energy Strategic Target 2035 and contributes to Emiratisation goals.
