Expansion of Matera's Space Economy through CGS and Regional Collaborations
The Centro di Geodesia Spaziale in Matera is pivotal in advancing Earth observation and geodesy in Italy. This facility, operational since the 1980s, is enhancing research and innovation through partnerships focused on the growing Space Economy.

The Centro di Geodesia Spaziale (CGS) 'Giuseppe Colombo' in Matera is a key facility for Earth observation and geodesy, employing methods such as satellite laser ranging (SLS), VLBI, and GNSS. Recently reinforced, it plays a crucial role in initiatives like the Matera Space Center Lab, which develops technologies for the New Space Economy and space debris monitoring.
An institutional agreement between ASI and the Basilicata Region aims to strengthen research and incorporate satellite data for territorial management. Additionally, a permanent Space Museum is under development to engage the public with aerospace technologies. The Matera area employs around 900 personnel in the sector, marking it as a strategic development hub.
