Experts Urge Nigerians to Prioritize Biodiversity Conservation on International Day of Forests 2026
On the 2026 International Day of Forests, environmental experts in Nigeria called for increased biodiversity conservation efforts among citizens and businesses. Joseph Onoja of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation and Eugene Itua from AGESI emphasized the critical role of forests in sustaining human life and economic activities. They highlighted the interdependence between business management and biodiversity, urging a shift towards nature-respecting development practices.

On the 2026 International Day of Forests, experts urged Nigerians and businesses to prioritize biodiversity conservation. Joseph Onoja, Director-General of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, and Eugene Itua, CEO of Natural Eco Capital, stressed the vital role of forests for human survival and economic sustainability.
They highlighted that forests are crucial for energy generation, especially regarding hydropower dams. Concerns were raised about eco-unfriendly practices, such as reliance on firewood for cooking. The UN noted that forests provide essential livelihoods for over 1.6 billion people and emphasized the need for increased investment in forest conservation.
