Families in Tabasco Demand Relocation of Schools Near Dos Bocas Refinery Due to Health Risks
More than 200 families in Tabasco are demanding the relocation of Agustín Melgar Kindergarten and Abías Domínguez Alejandro Elementary School, due to health risks linked to the nearby Dos Bocas refinery. The schools are situated less than 500 meters from high-risk facilities, including a sulfur recovery plant, raising concerns about exposure to hydrogen sulfide.
Families have sought relocation since the refinery's construction began nearly seven years ago and formally requested action from Education Minister Mario Delgado on November 19, 2024, but have not received a response. Governor Javier May has stated his government is open to dialogue but did not address relocation options, instead inviting parents to tour the refinery.
