Federated Mountain Clubs Excluded from Westpower's Waitaha River Hydro Proposal Review
The fast-track panel reviewing Westpower's hydro-power proposal for the Waitaha River has excluded the Federated Mountain Clubs (FMC) from the consultation process, despite their request for input. The proposal, which aims to generate electricity for about 12,000 households, is facing scrutiny regarding environmental impacts and financial compensation practices. The Department of Conservation has criticized the panel's decision, emphasizing the importance of FMC's perspective, while a decision on the project is expected by April 13.

A fast-track panel reviewing Westpower's hydro-power proposal on the Waitaha River, previously rejected in 2019, has not invited Federated Mountain Clubs (FMC) to comment, despite their unsolicited request. The proposed hydro scheme aims to generate electricity for approximately 12,000 households.
The panel, which has broad powers to invite comments, did consider submissions from the NZ Transport Agency and property owners along Waitaha Rd. The Department of Conservation (DoC) challenged the panel's decision, stating that FMC's input would be valuable for an informed decision.
Westpower is also under scrutiny for treating financial compensation as mitigation for environmental effects. The project, supported by Poutini Ngāi Tahu, includes constructing a 16-20 megawatt hydro scheme and is currently under review, with a decision expected by April 13.
