FEMA to Attend Pocahontas County Commission Meeting to Discuss Floodplain Ordinance Updates
Pocahontas County Floodplain Manager Scott Triplett proposed inviting FEMA to a future commission meeting to clarify updates needed for the county's Floodplain Ordinance. The existing ordinance, established on November 3, 2010, outlines permits and restrictions for floodplain areas. New FEMA floodplain maps, effective since July, expand floodplain designations using lidar technology for improved elevation accuracy. The commission discussed various budgetary concerns and approved funding for projects including tree removal for the PMH Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The new FEMA floodplain maps, which took effect in July, expand designated floodplain areas using lidar technology for more accurate elevation mapping.
Commission President John Rebinski raised concerns about FEMA's approval of the new maps despite county objections. Additionally, the commission approved $19,000 for tree removal related to the PMH Wastewater Treatment Plant Project, which has a total cost of $1,780,000. They also accepted a $5,000 Energy Efficiency and Conservation Grant for lighting upgrades at the former ARC Building and scheduled budget preparation sessions for March 9, 11, and 13, 2026.
