FERC Addresses Interconnection Challenges for Data Centers
FERC is tasked with regulating power markets and transmission, focusing on large-load interconnection reforms. The DOE has prompted FERC to standardize interconnection processes for data centers, addressing the growing demand and cost allocation for grid upgrades.

FERC is responding to the increasing demands from data centers by considering reforms to interconnection procedures. The Department of Energy has directed FERC to explore standardized processes for large-load interconnections through an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking.
The rapid expansion of energy-intensive facilities has strained existing interconnection systems, originally designed for generation projects. Discussions also cover the allocation of costs for transmission upgrades, debating whether these should be borne by developers or spread across ratepayers. Recent proceedings involving PJM Interconnection aim to create new service options to enhance interconnection for large loads while ensuring network reliability.
