Fergus County Commissioners Advocate for Data Center Regulations
Fergus County commissioners are advocating for regulatory measures to safeguard local interests concerning data centers. They have requested the Public Service Commission to consider four key points to protect existing ratepayers and provide transparency in contracts.

Fergus County commissioners have unanimously approved sending a letter to the Public Service Commission (PSC) and the Office of the Consumer Counsel, highlighting concerns about the impact of large data centers. They urge for the establishment of distinct rate classes for high-energy users, guidelines to mitigate financial risks, protection for current energy customers, and contract transparency between energy providers and data centers.
Commissioner Jennifer Saunders raised concerns about agricultural land usage for energy production and the longevity of data center demand. State Representative Shane Klakken noted the legislative focus on 'hyperscale AI data centers' and suggested that the commission's letter should encompass various data center types, including those for AI and crypto. The commissioners aim to ensure that regulatory frameworks are developed before new data facilities are established.
