Fermanagh and Omagh Council Highlights Wastewater Infrastructure Crisis Impacting Homebuilding

WATER INFRASTRUCTURE & DESALINATION

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has raised alarms about wastewater infrastructure issues affecting property development in the area. Build Homes NI identified 13 wastewater treatment works with no available capacity and reported that 15 settlements cannot accommodate 3% growth.

This situation has delayed the development of 1,448 homes in the district, contributing to a waiting list of over 2,300 people for social housing. Both the Council and Build Homes NI are advocating for increased investment from the Northern Ireland Executive to address chronic underfunding of NI Water, which faces a £2 billion deficit for future funding. Without improvements, new housing developments may be denied planning permission, exacerbating the region's housing crisis.
