The New South Wales Department of Planning and Environment approved a 437MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Armidale, with completion scheduled by 2027 and grid operation expected by 2028. The project enhances renewable energy storage and grid stability during the transition from coal and gas.
The AEMO compliance letter confirms it meets National Electricity Market requirements. Valent Energy must provide AU$2.55 million in community benefits and AU$400,000 annually for rail trail maintenance.
The capacity was increased from 150MW/300MWh to 150MW/437MWh due to a clerical error. Construction will create 100 jobs, and a similar project, the 240MW/480MWh Mornington BESS, is underway in Victoria.
