Firefly Aerospace Upgrades Alpha Rocket to Block II for Enhanced Reliability

SPACE ECONOMY

Firefly Aerospace is implementing a Block II configuration upgrade for its Alpha rocket to enhance reliability and production efficiency. The last Flight 7 in the current configuration is scheduled for launch in the coming weeks, testing multiple Block II subsystems.

The Block II upgrade will increase the rocket's length from approximately 97 feet to 104 feet, replace off-the-shelf systems with in-house avionics, and improve thermal protection. The upgrades aim to expand Alpha's capabilities for responsive missions, including hypersonic testing and satellite launches.

The first stage for Flight 7 has been delivered to Vandenberg Space Force Base for integration. Firefly has also acquired SciTec, enhancing its national security technologies, and appointed Ramon Sanchez as COO.
