Firetrace Report Warns Media Coverage of Turbine Fires Threatens EU Wind Projects
A report by Firetrace International warns that sensational media coverage of wind turbine fires is fostering community opposition to wind power, threatening over 12 GW of planned onshore projects in Europe. Despite a surge of new proposals, many projects have been canceled or stalled due to heightened fears, even though turbine fires are rare. The report advocates for better data on turbine incidents and emphasizes the need for proactive community engagement to support the renewable energy transition.

Firetrace International's report indicates that sensational media coverage of wind turbine fires is causing community opposition to wind power, jeopardizing over 12 GW of planned onshore wind capacity in Europe. Despite 200,000 MW of new proposals in two years, 56,563 MW of projects were canceled or stalled.
The report highlights the rarity of turbine fires, occurring at a rate of 1 in 1,710 to 7,000 turbines, yet these incidents receive excessive media attention. It calls for a standardized database on turbine fires to combat misinformation and suggests enhanced collaboration among OEMs, insurers, and regulators. Proactive community engagement and education about wind benefits are recommended to build support and trust, essential for advancing the renewable energy transition.
