First 500-MW Impulse Hydropower Unit Valve Passes Test in Xizang
The inlet spherical valve of the world's first 500-MW impulse hydropower unit at Datang Zhala Hydropower Station has successfully completed hydrostatic testing. This achievement underscores advancements in China's hydropower capabilities and positions the facility as a critical component of the nation's clean energy initiatives.

The inlet spherical valve for Unit 1 at Datang Zhala Hydropower Station in Xizang has passed hydrostatic pressure tests, meeting all design specifications. This project represents the initial megawatt-level hydropower undertaking in Xizang and serves as a major clean energy source for China's national demonstration base integrating hydropower, wind, and solar energy.
The facility features two 500 MW units utilizing Pelton turbines, with the valve having a diameter of 2.9 meters and a design pressure of 9 MPa. The assembly and testing presented unique challenges due to open-air conditions, which could influence future large-scale hydropower projects in similar environments.
