First British Woman Completes Trans-Atlantic Crossing by Hydrogen Balloon
Alicia Hempleman-Adams has made history as the first British woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean by gas balloon, achieving this feat alongside her team on the Atlantic Explorer. This flight represents the first successful manned transoceanic journey using hydrogen gas as the only lift source in nearly 20 years.

On June 7, the Atlantic Explorer hydrogen balloon landed in Luxembourg after a 70-hour journey, covering approximately 2,853 miles. Pilots Alicia Hempleman-Adams, Bert Padelt, and Peter Cuneo launched from Presque Isle, Maine, on June 4, aiming to complete the first hydrogen balloon crossing of the Atlantic.
This mission marks Hempleman-Adams as the first woman to achieve this milestone. The flight involved navigating at altitudes of 14,000 feet and dealing with challenging weather, including ice formation on the balloon. The landing near Diekirch and Bettendorf signifies a notable success in ballooning history and highlights advancements in hydrogen balloon technology.
