First U.S.-Built Rock Installation Vessel Delivered Amid Market Changes
The first U.S.-built rock installation vessel, Arcadia, was delivered to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company on June 25. Initially intended for the U.S. offshore wind sector, changing market conditions have prompted a strategic pivot toward international opportunities.

Arcadia, a 140-meter rock installation vessel capable of transporting 20,000 metric tons of rock, was delivered by Hanwha Philly Shipyard to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock on June 25. This vessel, compliant with the Jones Act, will commence operations on Equinor's Empire Wind 1 project and subsequently on Ørsted's Sunrise Wind project off New York.
Due to a shift in the U.S. offshore wind market, Great Lakes plans to utilize Arcadia for international projects following completion of the domestic contracts. The ship features advanced technology, including a DP-2 dynamic positioning system, and is designed for biofuel use. Hanwha Philly Shipyard continues to manage legacy projects while preparing for future shipbuilding opportunities, including new vessels for maritime agencies and commercial clients.
